“Human Rights-Proofing” Globalization -- UN right to food expert

[26 January 2012] Geneva – The UN expert on the right to food, Olivier De Schutter, on Thursday urged ministers gathering in Davos this week for the World Economic Forum to acknowledge the relationship between globalization and human rights, saying that “globalization should serve human rights and sustainable development, rather than being a process blind to its impacts on the individuals affected.”

Early action can avert Sahel food and nutrition crisis – UN expert

[24 January 2012] Geneva – “Drought, poor harvests and rising food prices have left the Sahel region of West-Central Africa on the brink of a humanitarian crisis,” warned Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food. “We must not wait until people are starving in order to act. The world must respond immediately to avert a full-scale food and nutrition crisis.”

WTO defending an outdated vision of food security

[16 December 2011] Geneva – "Globalization creates big winners and big losers. But where food systems are concerned, losing out means sinking into poverty and hunger. A vision of food security that deepens the divide between food-surplus and food-deficit regions, between exporters and importers, and between winners and losers, simply cannot be accepted.

Past events

24-25 November 2011: Expert roundtable on agrofuels (Brussels, Belgium)

On 24 and 25 November 2011, Olivier De Schutter will convene an expert roundtable aiming to examine the impacts of agrofuels produced for transport on different components of the right to adequate food : food prices, rural development, access to land and incomes in rural areas where the production of agrofuels is expanding. The expert roundtable shall lead the Special Rapporteur to adopt conclusions on this issue that should contribute both to the debate on the renewable energies policies in various countries or regions, and to the search for an international consensus on this issue, in particular under the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP).

This expert roundtable is convened with the support of the Brussels regional office of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

 
17-21 October 2011: 37th Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), (Rome, Italy)

On 17-21 October 2011, Olivier De Schutter will attend the 37th session of the FAO's Committee on World Food Security in Rome. The session could see the adoption of voluntary guidlelines on governance of land tenure, alongside round-table debates on food price volatility, gender and nutrition.

 
24 October 2011: the Special Rapporteur reports to UN General Assembly on alternative business models (New York, USA)

On 24 October 2011, Olivier De Schutter will present the report “Towards more equitable value chains: alternative business models in support of the right to food” to the UN General Assembly in New York.
