Many development agencies find themselves operating from a rights-based approach at the policy level, but a more apolitical and market-based approach at operational level. Trying to walk both paths can introduce major contradictions and stresses into development institutions. Is the issue less markets per se than power relations within markets and concentration and control as well as fairer rules for international trade?

This seminar will bring together commentators and practitioners working at the interface between small-scale production, markets and development, and academics who have developed insights into the potentials and pitfalls of rights-based and market-based approaches.
