What role does the management of fisheries resources have in achieving the right to food?Communities across the world, including in vulnerable and food insecure regions, depend on fisheries for livelihoods and for the provision of key dietary proteins. However, many species have been over-fished while water courses have been degraded by industrial activities, pollution and poor management, raising major concerns over the sustainability of fisheries activities. The Special Rapporteur is monitoring the impacts of fisheries management on democratic access to food, and will report to the UN General Assembly on the issue in October 2012. An expert roundtable will be convened with the support of the UNEP and OHCHR in April 2012 in Nairobi (by invitation only).
