Canada: national food strategy can eradicate hunger amidst plenty – UN rights expert

[16 May 2012] OTTAWA/GENEVA – “Canada has long been seen as a land of plenty. Yet today one in ten families with a child under six is unable to meet their daily food needs. These rates of food insecurity are unacceptable, and it is time for Canada to adopt a national right to food strategy,” said Olivier De Schutter, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, on the last day of his official visit to the country.*

[14 May 2012] GENEVA – As European Union Finance Ministers meet on 15 May to coincide with the G-8 Summit in Camp David, a group of United Nations independent experts urged the EU to take the lead in promoting the adoption of a global financial transaction tax to offset the costs of the enduring economic, financial, fuel, climate and food crises, and to protect basic human rights.

“Unfinished progress” – UN expert examines food systems in emerging countries

[8 March 2012] GENEVA – “The food systems of emerging countries are at a major crossroads. Rio+20: “No global goals without accountability” – an open appeal from over 20 UN experts

[19 March 2012] GENEVA – In an open letter* to world Governments, a group of 22 UN independent human rights experts called on States to incorporate universally agreed international human rights norms and standards with strong accountability mechanisms into the UN Rio+20 sustainable development conference’s goals, as the Rio+20 first round of informal-informal negotiations began today in New York.
