Human Rights Impact Assessments: public consultation

[20 July 2011] BRUSSELS – Olivier De Schutter invites States, United Nations departments and agencies, national human rights institutions, civil society and other relevant stakeholders to participate in the public consultation on the draft “Guiding Principles on Human Rights Impact Assessments of Trade and Investment Agreements.” The document seeks to set out key principles that should guide human rights impact assessments for trade and investment agreements between States.

Mission to South Africa: preliminary conclusions

[15 July 2011] PRETORIA – “South Africa is a champion of institutionalizing social, economic and cultural rights such as the human right to food, but it has yet to prove it can deliver results for 12 million poor food insecure people, 70 per cent of which live in rural areas,” said Olivier De Schutter on the last day of his official mission to South Africa. "South Africa can move beyond the ‘two economies’ to deliver one inclusive food system."

Gaza Flotilla: important information

[7 July 2011] BRUSSELS - The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food would like to clarify that, contrary to an erroneous report, he has not made any public statement on a draft of a report under preparation by the United Nations Panel of Inquiry on the flotilla incident of 31 May 2010. However, he will make his views known in due course.

 

 
10 milion people at risk of starvation in East Africa

[12 July 2011] GENEVA – Olivier De Schutter and the UN Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Somalia, Shamsul Bari, today urged the international community to step up efforts and take immediate concerted measures to address the most severe food crisis in the world today. Ten million people in northern Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea and South Sudan are at immediate risk of starvation because of the worst regional drought in 60 years.

First visit to South Africa by UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food

[5 July 2011] GENEVA – Olivier De Schutter will conduct an official mission to South Africa from 7 to 15 July 2011 to understand the steps taken by the authorities to implement the right to food. According to recent data, about 14 per cent of the population in South Africa is still vulnerable to food insecurity in the country, and 25 per cent of children under the age of six have had their development stunted by malnutrition.
