Democratizing the Millennium Development Goals

[18 September 2010] PARIS – On September 20-22, world leaders gather in New York to encourage progress towards meeting the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals.

The summit’s purpose is to take stock of successes and failures, and to move towards “concrete strategies for action.” But according to the UN Special Rapporteur, this summit would do the entire world a great service by acknowledging what has gone so wrong with the MDGs, and choosing a radically different approach.

Mission to Syria: Four years of drought

[7 September 2010] DAMASCUS – The UN Special Rapporteur on right to food estimates that today, following four years of severe drought in the north-eastern part of the country, between two to three million people may be considered food insecure in Syria. He applauded the efforts of the Government of Syria in seeking to provide food security to its population, including through providing subsidized basic food items and support to its agricultural sector. But Syria faces huge challenges, both because of climate change and because of the large influx of Iraqi refugees and the occupation of the Golan.

Agroecology, a way to feed the world?

[22 June 2010] BRUSSELS – On 21 and 22 June 2010, the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Olivier De Schutter, convened an international seminar aiming to take stock of the potential of agroecological approaches (agroforestry, mixed crop-livestock, biological pest control, intercropping, etc.) to meet global food security and save climate in 2050.

Food riots: “Predictable crisis, unprepared governments”

[7 September 2010] GENEVA – Following last week’s food riots in Mozambique and the resulting deaths and injuries, and noting similar social unrest in other countries, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Olivier De Schutter, called on governments and the international community to respond promptly to the renewed instability of global food markets.

Implementing the right to food: review of the progress

[14 May 2010] GENEVA – Two years after taking office as UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to food, Prof. Olivier De Schutter presents a review of the progress made by a number of countries in implementing the human right to food at national level.

His review highlights concrete examples of initiatives recently taken by countries such as South Africa, Brazil, Mozambique, India or Nepal.
