[6 December] NEW YORK - Concentration in the agrifood sector has been increasing over the past few years, with sometimes tragic consequences for small-scale farmers and agricultural workers.

In this new briefing note, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food explores how the creation and abuse of dominant buyer power by global agribusiness firms can be addressed in competition law, and how developed and developing States can work together in this way.

Cancun Summit must lead to a “Green Marshall Plan for Agriculture”

[29 November] NEW YORK & GENEVA - Without a substantial change in policies, greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture could rise by 40 percent by 2030, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food warned, urging negotiators at the Cancun Climate Summit to “consider climate and agricultural policies together to effectively address climate change and its disastrous impact on the right to food.”

In his view, “Cancun should lead the way towards a ‘Green Marshall Plan’ for agriculture.”

Human Rights Impact Assessments for Trade and Investment Agreements

[24 November] This report reviews the conclusions of a recent international expert seminar on human rights impact assessments for trade and investment agreements convened under the auspices of the UN Special Rapporteur for the Right to Food.

The seminar, hosted by the South Centre in Geneva in June 2010, was jointly organized by the Berne Declaration, the Canadian Council for International Co-operation, Misereor and others.

Report: Access to Land and the Right to Food

[21 October] NEW YORK - Today, Olivier De Schutter presented his new report on access to land and the right to food at the 65th General Assembly of the United Nations (Third Committee).

The report shows that up to 30 million hectares of farmland is lost annually due to environmental degradation, conversion to industrial use or urbanization. A trend exacerbated by the expansion of agrofuels and the speculation on farmland.
