Speech at CFS: recent right to food achievements

[18 October 2011] ROME – Today the Special Rapporteur presented recent developments on the implementation of the right to food at national and regional levels in an address to the 37th session of the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS).

Focusing on Latin America and Africa for this first review to the CFS, Olivier De Schutter profiled the innovative approaches countries have adopted for integrating the human right to adequate food into their constitutions, laws, strategies and courts.

Recalling the spirit of the reform of the CFS, he suggested several ways in which the CFS could create a global enabling environment which would support these efforts, and suggested that the CFS use indicators to review the progress made on its own work and recommendations.
