Bangladesh open-pit coal mine threatens fundamental rights, warn UN experts

[28 February 2012] GENEVA – “The Government of Bangladesh must ensure that any policy concerning open-pit coal mining includes robust safeguards to protect human rights. In the interim, the Phulbari coal mine should not be allowed to proceed because of the massive disruptions it is expected to cause,” said today a group of United Nations independent experts.

Early action can avert Sahel food and nutrition crisis – UN expert

[24 January 2012] GENEVA – “Drought, poor harvests and rising food prices have left the Sahel region of West-Central Africa on the brink of a humanitarian crisis,” warned Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food. “We must not wait until people are starving in order to act. The world must respond immediately to avert a full-scale food and nutrition crisis.”

[26 January 2012] GENÈVE – Olivier De Schutter, l’expert des Nations unies sur le droit à l’alimentation, a vivement recommandé jeudi aux ministres réunis à Davos pour le Forum économique mondial de reconnaître la relation entre la mondialisation et les droits de l’homme, en déclarant que « la mondialisation devrait servir les droits de l’homme et le développement durable, au lieu d’être un processus aveugle à ses retombées sur les individus concernés. »

WTO defending an outdated vision of food security

[16 December 2011] GENEVA – "Globalization creates big winners and big losers. But where food systems are concerned, losing out means sinking into poverty and hunger. A vision of food security that deepens the divide between food-surplus and food-deficit regions, between exporters and importers, and between winners and losers, simply cannot be accepted.
